Dear Students,
Welcome to a new SSC Adult Education semester. I can't tell you how happy I am that you have decided to join our class at the Oak Forest Center! I look forward to a semester of learning, growing, sharing, and succeeding! I am excited about the many tools/resources that I've been using the past few semesters, tools and resources that I believe enhance your learning. I'm also excited about implementing some new strategies and resources that will enrich your classroom experience.
One of the tools Ms. Mary and I have found most beneficial to our students is the use of the TABE Assessments, practice tests that are given three to four times per week in math and language arts. While giving you some insight as to your skills in various areas, they also provide us another teaching tool. We also encourage our students to write regularly; therefore; each student keeps a journal folder, provided by us, in which to practice their writing skills. We feature a "Student of the Week" on our bulletin board (hallway outside our classroom), and are especially excited about our growing library of fiction and non-fiction books (we're always looking for donations!) available to our students. Our Adult Literacy Program provides our students with free tutoring, and there are opportunities outside our class for educational/personal growth through participation in the annual SSC Women's Conference and our yearly trip to Springfield for State Legislative Awareness Day. These are just some of the many features of our classroom and opportunities offered by the Adult Education Department of SSC that make our program an enriching experience for all our students. I believe that you will find your experience in Room 5240 rewarding in so many ways! I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you and being a part of your journey to success!
I am also excited about this Weebly site, which is a relative newcomer to our classroom. I firmly believe that it can become a tool to keep you informed and keep us connected. It is going to become a mandatory site; in other words, you will be required to use it weekly. My hope is that you find it to be a beneficial tool in so many ways. As class progresses, we will discuss the many ways in which in can be used as a teaching/learning tool. In the meantime, however, I ask that each of you uses this discussion board to tell us a little (two or three sentences will suffice) about yourself. For instance, why did you choose SSC, and what are your short-term and long-range goals?
Again, I welcome each of you to Room 5240 at the Oak Forest Campus of South Suburban College. I want you to think of this experience as enriching and rewarding. But, most importantly, I want you to consider it a stepping stone or starting point to something more, whether it be a stepping stone to a job, promotion at work, higher education, or, perhaps, simply personal enrichment. Welcome!!!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Camille Johnson
